Project description

Inspired by Travis Scott’s music video “Til Further Notice”, this project delves into the concept of Utopia as an unattainable ideal. Through a visual and spatial analysis of the video, it reflects on the fragmentation, isolation, and emotional detachment that characterize contemporary society, aiming to provoke thought on the tension between aspiration and reality.

The first part of the analysis focused on understanding how the director conveyed a sense of self-reflection, inner thought, and melancholy, so we began by reconstructing the composition of the video’s key frames, discovering that the spatial layout often revolves around circular forms with a central focal point. These compositions are sometimes divided into two sections by straight horizontal lines, creating strong contrasts between light and dark, usually in cold color tones.

Process

The project takes place inside the main lounge of the "T700 Milano" yacht, where a unique exhibition space is settled. The project wants to combine the essence of contemporary art and social critique, with Anish Kapoor’s works at its core, fostering a dialogue about the contradictions of the modern world. This exhibition is not merely a physical space but a metaphor for a temporary island of reflection amidst a fragmented society. Visitors are invited to engage with the artworks and layout, which reflect on the dissonance between the idea of a perfect world (utopia) and the harsh realities of modern life.

The challenge of this project lies in portraying the concept of "Utopia" as something both desirable and unattainable, reflecting the fragmentation and alienation present in today’s society. The project needed to transcend the idea of a traditional art exhibition, creating an immersive space that would inspire deep reflection on contemporary contradictions. Another challenga was to integrate the works of Anish Kapoor within the confined, unique space of a yacht lounge, which needed to serve both as a public exhibition and as a metaphorical space for societal reflection.

Solution

The final result was to transform the lounge of the “T700 Milano” yacht into an exhibition space that is both physical and metaphorical. Anish Kapoor’s works, with their exploration of emptiness and perception, were strategically placed to enhance the project's message of alienation and societal fragmentation. The design of the space encouraged visitors to engage with the artworks in a manner that prompts reflection on a utopia that feels increasingly distant, while also offering a unique setting on a yacht to amplify the overall experience.

A central island is formed by the Moon System by Zaha Hadid. Its purpose is not to foster conversation, but rather to encourage inner perception and reflection on the true meaning of utopia, highlighting the divide between what we aspire to achieve and what we can realistically attain.

Results

The result is an immersive art experience that transcends the physical boundaries of the yacht lounge, offering visitors a profound reflection on the contradictions of modern society. The juxtaposition of Kapoor’s art within this unusual setting invites viewers to engage critically with the idea of utopia and consider how these societal challenges can be addressed in the future. This project successfully fosters an environment of awareness, encouraging a shift in perspective toward a more thoughtful, self-reflective future.
