Project description
Lymfa is the main project of my Bachelor's degree at Politecnico di Milano in product design, developed in collaboration with Artemide, a leading company in the lighting design sector.
Inspired by the beauty of nature, Lymfa creates a calm and immersive atmosphere, offering more than just light, an experience that reconnects people with the elegance of the natural world. Reconnection with nature is a core value of Artemide; the project studies every facet of the office environment: from workstations and meeting rooms to areas for relaxation and social interaction. Studies on biophilia, like the 2014 University of Exeter research, show that natural elements can enhance productivity and reduce stress. Lymfa translates these insights into a lighting concept that promotes well-being and elevates the everyday work experience.

The process
The inspiration for the product family is deeply rooted in the natural world, which becomes its central theme and defining strength. This led to an in-depth exploration of a natural element capable of embodying elegance, organic beauty, and the grandeur of nature. This is how Lymfa was conceived, just like a plant, it originates from a flower: the calla lily. Its organic shapes are the result of a continuous evolution, aiming to blend elegance and fluidity with the constraints of mass production. The final outcome stands as a strong example of how design must maintain a symbiotic relationship with manufacturing technologies, which are integral to the ideation and development process.

The suspended version of Lymfa was designed for typical work areas with one or more employees, by repeating it according to spatial and personal needs. The wall-mounted version serves as a wall-washing light, providing decorative illumination for relaxation areas and corridors. The floor-standing Lymfa is intended for more informal zones, such as lounge areas, where it creates a soft, indirect, and diffuse ambient light. Finally, Lymfa Mega is designed for larger spaces, with its one-meter diameter, it is ideal for meeting rooms, offering both direct and general illumination.
Results
The outcome of my Bachelor's Degree project is a family of lamps designed for biophilic office environments, in all of its facets. The aim is to reduce employee stress by incorporating organic shapes and the flowing elegance of nature-inspired design, creating a workspace that feels lighter, more serene, and conducive to productivity.
One more thing…
An important feature of the project is the wavy texture found on the inner surface of all elements in the Lymfa family. This detail is designed to evoke the flowing movement and forms of nature. It only appears on the interior, which varies across the available color options: a neutral outer shell contrasts with a bold, expressive interior, designed to highlight the texture, draw attention, and create a distinctive visual identity.
Artemide's point of view
Artemide considered the project to be perfectly aligned with its core values and design philosophy. The biophilic approach applied to the office space was regarded as highly contemporary and an excellent starting point for design exploration. Among all the projects presented, around ten in total, mine stood out as the only one for which they requested the brochure and additional materials, showing a particular interest in its concept, vision, and potential.
