Project Description

My team and I had the opportunity to collaborate with the Azimut & Benetti Group during our last university exam, on the development of a 35-meter concept yacht for the Magellano range: the project focused on exploring the future evolution of the Magellano 30M. The objective was to envision how this iconic range could evolve in the upcoming years, combining its distinctive identity with innovative design solutions and new lifestyle trends.

Background

The Magellano 27M introduced a renewed design direction for Azimut, redefining the range through an updated language. Building upon this evolution an through a realistic and market-oriented approach the project aimed to preserve the distinctive character of the brand with a result that balances innovation and continuity, offering a forward-looking interpretation of the Magellano.

Exteriors

The core sketches were concieved as a natural evolution of the line, integrating innovations without compromising the core Magellano philosophy of comfortable, long-range navigation. Key elements have been refined: the profile's black stripe now extends to the waterline and continues to the stern, while the oblique strips form a continuous ring around the yacht, redefining the beach club. Finally, to match the proportions of a 35-metre vessel, a sun deck with sun loungers and a compact gym has been added, ensuring both interior and exterior spaces are fully enjoyed and appreciated.

Moreover, the beach club has been expanded, and a pool on the main deck creates different opportunities: while in navigation or not in use, it can be emptied and covered with mattresses, transforming into a sunbathing area. Notably, the pool is positioned on the main deck rather than the lower deck; a choice made to remain consistent with the Magellano philosophy of creating closer, more intimate spaces while still allowing guests to fully enjoy life at sea. In addition, extendable bulwarks help open the area directly to the ocean, further enhancing the connection between interior and exterior spaces.

Interiors

The interiors were conceived as a seamless extension of our client’s home, aligning with a clear trend in the American market where yachts are increasingly evolving into floating villas. Inspired by luxury penthouses and expansive open spaces facing the panorama, the main salon is divided into three distinct zones: a dining, living-cinema, and cocktail area that effortlessly connect the indoors with the outside world. The design philosophy embraces the principles of Warm Minimalism, contrasting straight, linear bulkheads with the organic, sinuous shapes of the furniture. On the main deck, custom-designed pieces feature detailed contrasts, such as the refined stitching on the sofa, while materials with prominent, expressive grains characterize the surfaces and the textured carpet below. Finally, to give each salon a distinct purpose, the upper deck incorporates a curated selection of loose furniture to enhance flexibility and comfort, effortlessly transforming the space into a vibrant "party deck" when hosting.

Results

In conclusion, the Magellano Odyssey embraces the core principles and distinctive characteristics of the iconic Magellano line, projectualizing them into the future. It represents a visionary evolution of both the Magellano 30M and the new 27M, blending heritage with forward-thinking design.

Azimut's point of view

At the conclusion of the two-week project, representatives from Azimut and Yachtique highly praised the concept, noting that the innovations introduced to the traditional Magellano lines were both justified and contextualized in the exteriors and interior layout tailored for the American market. Key architectural elements were highly appreciated, including the integration of the sun deck, the expandable structural areas connecting the interior and exterior, and the straight linear strips in the profile. A standout feature was the innovative system of adjustable louvers positioned above the beach club, offering light control and privacy, seamlessly regulating shading and airflow to enhance the comfort of the outdoor lounge. Furthermore, they appreciated the strong connection between the indoors and outdoors: a design direction they are also actively exploring for future projects. In particular, they praised the lounge layout in front of the cocktail bar where, thanks to the expandable bulwark, an angular opening seamlessly links the interior and exterior, creating a versatile and welcoming space for socialization.
